English guide · Psychiatry and mental health
When is it time to see a psychiatrist in Amman?
The question is not whether your distress is “serious enough.” A better question is whether symptoms are persistent, affecting sleep, work, relationships, or daily responsibilities, or becoming harder to manage on your own.
Signs that deserve an assessment
If low mood, emptiness, loss of interest, or anxiety lasts most of the day nearly every day for two weeks or more, consider speaking with a mental health professional. Other signs can include changes in sleep or appetite, poor concentration, low energy, guilt or low self-worth, withdrawal, irritability, or difficulty meeting normal responsibilities. These signs do not automatically diagnose depression, but they are worth understanding rather than ignoring. [1] [2]
Psychiatrist or psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialist training in psychiatry. Because of this medical training, a psychiatrist can evaluate medical or medication-related contributors, prescribe psychiatric medication when appropriate, and may also provide psychotherapy. Psychologists focus on psychological assessment and psychotherapy. Both can be valuable; the right starting point depends on your symptoms, goals, and health history. [3]
Anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders
One difficult night or a stressful week does not automatically mean a disorder. Persistent insomnia, early waking, oversleeping, panic symptoms, physical tension, or repetitive worry that interferes with daily life are reasonable reasons to seek an assessment. Mental health difficulties can also appear as headaches, chest tightness, digestive problems, irritability, or social withdrawal.
What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?
A clinician may ask when symptoms began, how often they occur, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect sleep, work, relationships, and usual activities. Bringing a medication list and brief notes about mood and sleep can help. The appointment is not a test, and you do not need perfect words. Honest information helps the clinician understand the full picture and consider medical or medication-related causes. [2]
Does seeing a psychiatrist always mean medication?
No. Treatment may involve psychotherapy, medication, or both, depending on symptoms, severity, medical history, and preferences. Do not start, stop, or change psychiatric medication without medical advice. Evidence-based psychological treatments are effective for depression, and medication may be appropriate in some situations. [1] [2]
Get urgent help when safety is at risk
If you are thinking about harming yourself, feel you may act on those thoughts, or face immediate danger, do not wait for a routine appointment. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department now. If possible, stay with someone you trust while help is arranged.
You do not need to know the exact name of the problem before asking for help. “I need a mental health assessment” is enough to begin.
