When the anxiety alarm stays on

Imagine an alarm system that is designed to protect you but has become unusually sensitive. Sometimes it responds to a real fire; sometimes it reacts to steam. Anxiety can work in a similar way: it is a signal worth understanding, not proof that danger is present.

Anxiety is protective — until the alarm cannot switch off

Anxiety is part of the body’s threat-response system. It can sharpen attention before an interview, a difficult decision, or an unfamiliar situation. It becomes more concerning when the alarm remains active after the situation has passed, or when it repeatedly signals danger without a clear threat.

How anxiety can show up in the body

Anxiety may involve a racing heart, muscle tension, sweating, shaking, faster breathing, stomach discomfort, headaches, or an inability to settle. It can also appear as persistent anticipation, repeated worst-case thinking, difficulty concentrating, or a strong need for reassurance.

These symptoms alone do not establish an anxiety disorder. Medical conditions and medications can cause similar experiences, so persistent or worrying physical symptoms deserve appropriate medical attention rather than self-diagnosis.

When worry follows you into bed

The body may reach the bedroom while the threat system remains awake. A person may replay conversations, predict tomorrow’s problems, or monitor sleep so closely that the bed starts to feel like a waiting room rather than a place to recover.

Notice the pattern without blaming yourself: when does the worry begin, what intensifies it, and how is it affecting sleep, appetite, work, concentration, or relationships? Ongoing anxiety or insomnia may be a reasonable reason to speak with a mental health professional in Amman.

When is an assessment worth considering?

Consider an assessment if anxiety is persistent or recurrent, leads to avoidance, interferes with daily responsibilities, or significantly affects sleep, concentration, or relationships. Repeated panic attacks, difficult-to-control worry, and distressing physical symptoms also deserve a conversation with a psychiatrist or psychologist.

An assessment is not a label and does not automatically mean medication. It is a way to understand the pattern, consider other contributors, and discuss options. Do not start, stop, or change psychiatric medication without medical guidance.

Get urgent help when safety is at risk

If you are thinking about harming yourself, feel you may act on those thoughts, or face immediate danger, do not wait for a routine appointment. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department now. If possible, stay with someone you trust while help is arranged.

The alarm is not your enemy, but it does not have to lead every decision. A calmer question can be: “What is this alarm trying to protect me from, and is the danger still present now?”

This article is for general education and does not provide an individual diagnosis or treatment plan. Persistent or severe physical symptoms need appropriate medical assessment. Do not start or stop medication without guidance from a qualified clinician.
